Whether you choose to believe it or not, driving is something that requires a lot mental fortitude. Those who experience a fear of driving have likely convinced themselves that driving is only a recipe for disaster. Most people don't understand that a fear of driving comes from the comfort zone that they've mentally developed. You really have nothing to fear if you're on unfamiliar roads or have driven past your exit. In a worst case scenario, you pull over, ask for directions, and get back towards your destination.
You may also fear being involved in a car accident, driving over bridges, or driving on highways. You need to understand that some things are simply beyond your control. You do not have dominion over the structure of bridges, or the actions of other people. Ergo, there's no logical reason to overly concern yourself with elements that you cannot control.
Rather than suffering though the physical and mental toll of these fears, address these problems directly. Bring along a friend and practice driving on the highway, and try to do this multiple times in a short period of time. These actions will familiarize you with the roads themselves, as well as the mental idea of highway driving.
Your fear of driving exists solely because you have put it there, in your own mind, based on many irrational thoughts. You need to eradicate these negative thoughts, think sensibly, and fight your fears directly!
